Bonnyton Thitle’s Under-20s reclaimed top spot in West of Scotland Football League Conference D with a solid if unspectacular display against Cumnock.

Thistle pushed out to a 2-0 lead within half an hour but after that the levels dropped and Cumnock were allowed back into the game.

After going 4-1 up early in the second half again the hosts slacked off but in the end three points sees the Ton atop the table again, level on points with Troon and Irvine Meadow XI.

The visitors had a decent chance through Robbie Rae as he found space on the edge of the box but Bradley Bain got down easily to his effort.

The ‘keeper was alert to another half-chance moments later when Harry Burns took a shot, and his intervention allowed for the Ton to take the lead.

Farrell, playing in a new-look midfield alongside Kai Linton and Andy McClymont, opened the scoring with a composed finish in the ninth minute and it gave him the impetus to go and put his stamp on the game from that moment on.

Thistle would continue to dominate possession after the goal and just before the half hour mark extended their advantage through Simon Miller

However within five minutes of going two in front, the visitors found a way back into the match as the Ton back line switched off.

Even from the resulting kick-off Bonnyton were slack and almost let Cumnock in again but three minutes later re-established the two-goal cushion when Farrell’s effort across the face of goal beat the ‘keeper via a deflection.

After the restart Bonnyton came out the stronger, with Callum Fyfe subbed on for Miller.

Luke Bolton had a pop from distance that flashed wide of the post before Farrell let fly from the edge of the box after neat work from Callum McFadzean and McClymont in the final third, but he wasn’t able to keep his shot down.

It was Fyfe who made it 4-1 just after the hour mark with a composed strike that beat the goalkeeper.

The game hit a bit of a lull for the next ten minutes before a Cumnock break led to a rash challenge from Reece Bryden that resulted in a penalty.

Jacob Pagan dispatched the penalty to make it 4-2.
